THIS WEEKEND, STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE CENTRAL VALLEY SHARPENED THEIR SOCCER SKILLS AT THE CHEVRON SOCCER ACADEMY AT CHUKCHANSI PARK. AS PART OF CHEVRON’S OPEN GOAL PROJECT, THEY TEAMED UP WITH THE FRESNO FOOTBALL CLUB TO HOST FREE SOCCER TRAINING TO MORE THAN 200 STUDENTS… THEY USED THE SPORT AS A MEANS TO TEACH THEM ABOUT SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGENEERING AND MATH. ORGANIZERS SAYS THIS ACADEMY GIVES YOUNG ATHLETES A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD IN A SPORT THAT OFTEN RESTRICTS THOSE WHO CANNOT ‘PAY-TO-PLAY’ MEGAN LOPEZ / PUBLIC AFFAIRS REP, CHEVRON 2:15 – 2:26 “This soccer academy is really a way to help fill that gap, and give the students an opportunity to be exposed to professional coaches and athletes, to learn new skills and really just have a good day.” THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR FOR THE SOCCER ACADEMY, AND ORGANIZERS SAY THEY HOPE TO RETURN TO SERVE MORE COMMUNITIES NEXT YEAR.
