Back in the early days at primary school playing
footy with the boys at lunchtime and after
school, I’d run around and pretend I was my favourite football players and that was always
a boy, so the realism of it was that there was no one for me to look up to or no-one
had done that before so that wasn’t something that was meant for me. I used to, like, go through phases of which
player I was pretending to be on the day but if I was Neita, I was always kicking a goal
after the siren, like, taking a big contested mark, even if there was no-one in the backyard. I think I thought that I was an AFL player
at the time, like, as a kid. That’s one of the great things about being a kid, you have
your imagination and so I’d just imagine that I was. And then I used to tell people that
when I get older I’d play AFL footy and they’d all laugh at me. So, whenever someone tells
me I can’t do something anymore, or something’s impossible, it’s hard to believe them because
I had just done the impossible. I think it just opens up a whole new pathway
and a whole new way of thinking for those young girls. If I would have had a rolemodel like
Daisy Pearce I think things would have been a lot different, but to know those girls are
gonna be having a kick and taking it seriously and wanting to be where I am one day,
that kind of means everything and it’s a big reason why we play.
